2019 Spring Appeal

Interns at the Garden

If you love gardening as much as we do, then you know that gardens bring great joy, but also require a lot of tending. In the next few weeks, we’ll begin planting our spring and summer gardens, but this is just the beginning. The daily tasks of watering, weeding and maintaining our plantings over the hot Memphis summer is a challenge for our Garden horticulturists. Did you know that the Memphis Botanic Garden only has 9 dedicated gardeners to tend 31 different display gardens? Although we have some amazing volunteers that assist us, it’s not enough. Each year we must hire additional summer gardeners to keep our gardens looking their best.

This year we would like to hire six college students to participate in an Internship program to assist our Horticulture Team. The Internship program is a win-win for both the Garden and college students looking to gain real-world experience in the horticulture field. These apprenticeships introduce students to the workings of a public garden and knowledge of various plant species, their attributes, uses, and cultivation. Interns will be challenged to put their knowledge and experience into action with an individualized garden design project at the end of the summer.

Please help the Garden bring this Internship program to fruition with a donation. Each $5,000 we raise will support one paid intern for an entire summer. Your donations will not only help a young person with real-world work experience, but it will also help the Garden fulfill its mission of connecting people with plants.

“Each day brought on new challenges that expanded my knowledge and helped to shape me into a professional in my field.”
- Kacie Crain, 2018 MBG Intern now in her senior year at Mississippi State University

" The staff is very welcoming and eager to teach students about horticulture… This really gives great insight to what working in a place like MBG would be like full time.”
- Anna Armour, 2018 MBG Intern now in her sophomore year at Mississippi State University
