Giving Tuesday

Plant a seed to support the Memphis Botanic Garden this Giving Tuesday! By becoming part of the Garden you’re supporting an urban oasis for all Memphians which supports educational opportunities for all, art programming, and an awareness and appreciation of the environment. Join us today!

We grow when you give and every gift counts! Small gifts come together to ensure the Garden continues to serve students, visitors, and our local community.

How we serve our community:

  • We offer educational programs for children and adults in a wide range of topics and formats.
  • We offer science and nature-based teachers' workshops each year.
  • We support local, regional, and national efforts to promote the arts.
  • We are a gathering place for Mid-South horticultural clubs and organizations, hosting meetings, plant shows, and sales throughout the year.
  • We are committed to providing access to all families, regardless of income, through our Free Family Membership program.
  • Our arboretum boasts more than 170 species of trees. It is certified as a Level 4 Arboretum by the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council and is the first to be certified as an Urban Forestry Center of Excellence for the state of Tennessee.
  • We maintain 30 specialty gardens over our 96 acres of urban greenspace for the enjoyment of visitors while increasing awareness of plants and the environment.

Ways to contribute to the Garden:

Learn from our current staff, members, and volunteers the impact of contributions on the Garden:

My office overlooks the entrance to our Visitors Center and each day, one of my greatest joys is watching as families, retired couples, brides (and grooms!), artists, and so many more enter our grounds for a few hours of relaxation and fun. The excitement on children's faces as they anticipate their visit to My BigBackyard, the Koi Pond, or the Chicken Coop reminds me of my children when they were younger and the next generation of members to this, our urban oasis!

-Michael Allen, Executive Director

I love volunteering at the MBG! I meet lots of friendly gardeners, learn new skills, AND get to dig in the dirt, pull weeds, and smell the flowers. What more could you ask for?

-Garden Volunteer

Volunteers mean a lot to me personally as well as to the Horticulture Department. Our Spring and Fall Plant Sales are definitely volunteer-driven. Not only the sales themselves but the growing of the plants from start to finish is accomplished mainly by our volunteers. Volunteers help to maintain our gardens, notably Hosta and Daylily, Herb, Delta, Butterfly, and several others. Our Chicken Coop in the Urban Home Garden was largely built with volunteer help. Many other projects that we undertake have volunteers behind them. Whether it is routine work or special events, they couldn't happen without our wonderful volunteers!

Financial support from individuals in the community has really been the backbone of our accomplishments here at MBG. Just look at our buildings and the Garden as a whole. Goldsmith, Hardin Hall, Little Garden Club Sensory Garden, Memphis Garden Club Sculpture Garden, and the list goes on. Many of the trees and other plantings as well as hardscape, such as rock work, benches, etc. have been supported by groups as well as individuals in our community. Without these contributions, our property would just be a shadow of what it is today.

-Rick Pudwell, Director of Horticulture and Outreach

During the pandemic this past year, MBG has kept members informed through interesting newsletters. Opening the garden allowed us to enjoy the calming effects of nature in a safe environment as well as providing a place to exercise. The garden was our respite for a healthy body and mind.

During Live at the Garden, I get the opportunity to work with people from every area. From the crews who set up everything, the artist’s tour, the volunteers, and the fans who come to enjoy the show.  We all play our part in making the experience of live music so great. One group that stands out is our volunteers and how excited and dedicated they are. They are happy to be there, happy to help, and loyal to Live at the Garden and the fans. It’s gratifying to know that everyone that works and enjoys Live at the Garden, helps the Memphis Botanic Garden shine.

-Jamison Totten, Co-Director of Live at the Garden

We love to take 2 mile walks through the garden when the weather permits. The spring flowers and cherry trees are a wonderful sight and the autumn colors are fantastic. Just being in the Garden lifts my spirit and lowers stress. I often take photos and videos to add to my large digital collection. The MBG has provided us the inspiration to develop our own backyard garden both for flowers and vegetables. We appreciate the enormous amount of work and dedication of all the people who maintain and make the Memphis Botanic Garden a great attribute of the city of Memphis. Thank you for providing such a wonderful place of beauty.

Donations big and small make a great impact on the Garden. Your gifts are not just dollars to us; they are bulbs in the spring, supplies for the classroom, interpretive signage, and so much more. Come to the Garden and see for yourself the tangible impact your donation dollars have in every corner of our 96 acres.

-Sue Matthews, Director of Finance

I love volunteering at the Garden. I not only get to work with plants, I learn so much about gardening. But most of all, I enjoy working with the other volunteers. The garden employees are so helpful with any questions and helpful hints to enhance my gardening skills. I look forward to volunteering at the Garden for many years to come.

Having worked at the Garden for over 20 years, it has been a pleasure to watch the garden grow, change, and continue to mature into a place where plants enrich lives. I have especially enjoyed working with the various garden clubs who have given countless hours of volunteer time and donated resources that have helped horticulture and public engagement work hand in hand.

-Kyle McLane, Assistant Director of Horticulture

I am a disabled Marine Corps Veteran who uses photography as a form of therapy. The gardens are a beautiful, peaceful place where I can decompress and remember the joy that nature brings.

A Garden wedding is truly something special, not just to the happy couple but to every life impacted by the Garden. Each bride and groom become part of our community and imbue joyful moments inside and out. Weddings and rentals account for a large portion of our revenue, which means each walk down the aisle supports our mission and helps us connect with the greater Memphis community.

-Michael Strickland, Director of Rentals

I love having access to the Garden during all seasons, being able to step out of the hustle and bustle to absorb the beauty of nature.
