Adventure Fridays in My Big Backyard – Fridays in June-Aug - $3,000
This summer series gives families in Memphis an additional reason to visit the Garden on Fridays. Each week a teacher-naturalist is stationed in our family garden with a new adventure to take part in…from bird-watching to pond studies to insect observations…there’s always something new to see and do. These activities include scavenger hunts, games and hands-on learning and are free to visitors. We see many families, including several grandparents who care for children over the summer while parents are working, coming back week after week to play together in the garden.
The Garden is a community resource that educates over 35,000 school children each year. That is 4.5 times the national average of U.S. botanic gardens! Shelby County public schools make up the bulk of our educational programs providing children who live in low-income and inner-city areas an opportunity to experience nature and play in a safe, outdoor environment.

School Outreach Programs – Year-round - $5,000 (10,000 served annually)
For over 25 years, MBG has been taking the Garden into the classrooms. Outreach programs are a popular way to supplement the school curriculum in that they are less expensive and reduce the logistical requirements needed for traditional field trips. The Garden’s Outreach programs have beem designed to correlate with curriculum standards and present a variety of age appropriate, science based topics that target children from Preschool through 8th grade. Each program is approximately 1 hour long and investigates a scientific topic through hands- on learning and discussion. Take-home projects are included as a way to reinforce the topic.
