“My Art Show features 40+ paintings, more than half of which were painted in the last one year (during Covid-19 isolation). My Art is esoteric in terms of style, subject, medium and substrate. Consequently, my solo Art Show often looks like a multiple-artist exhibit. I am triggered into painting by many factors. The sudden bloom of flowers, or the cacophony of Canadian geese in the playground next door, or the spectacular formation of birds descending on Memphis, or the historic events like the once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse in 2017, or the sad landmark of half a million lives lost due to Covid-19—all motivate me to paint. Most of my paintings are serious but on occasion, I introduce a comic element into my painting, like the monster hidden in the winter landscape of Pedis Grande! I sincerely hope you enjoy my show as much as I did producing it”
There will be an opening Reception on June 13 from 3-5 pm.
Dr. K. Gopal Murti (Gopal) has been living in Memphis since 1975. He retired in 2008 as the Director of Scientific Imaging Center in St. Jude children’s Research Hospital and as an Adjunct Professor of Pathology at the University of Tennessee Medical School. Gopal is well known for producing colorful and aesthetically pleasing images using electron, confocal and multi-photon microscopes. His Scientific images have garnered many National and International awards and routinely appear in medical, college and high school text books. He was a perennial top-10 winner of the prestigious Nikon International Small-world Photography competition. He was credited with adding color to the otherwise dull black and white electron micrographs.
As a scientist, Gopal marveled at the intricacy, symmetry and the uniqueness of the biological world. He also noticed that the biological images are aesthetically pleasing and could be appreciated by non-scientists as well. After retirement in 2008, he wanted to choose a hobby that preserved his artistic vision by becoming a watercolor artist. He trained under the renowned watercolor artist, Fred Rawlinson, and painted hundreds of paintings to date. Gopal is impressed by the beauty of everything around him and his eclectic taste is reflected in his paintings. Some of his paintings incorporate elements of science such as cell components, molecular structures (DNA and protein) and other intriguing but aesthetically pleasing biological entities. In the last 3 years, he mastered acrylic painting as well and his most recent paintings are primarily in this medium.
Gopal exhibited his paintings at several venues including Kroc Center, Ross Gallery, Tennessee Art Commission Gallery (Nashville), WKNO (PBS) studio and Memphis Botanic Garden. He routinely participates in Juried exhibitions of Memphis Germantown Art League (MGAL) and Gibson County Visual Art Association’s National shows and Artist’s Link art shows. He won a dozen awards in juried shows including the “Best of Show” Award in the MGAL Spring Exhibition of 2017. He served as the President of MGAL from 2012-2014, and received their highest honor, Spectrum award, for outstanding leadership and creative enthusiasm. His paintings are displayed in private collections, local hospitals, educational and financial institutions.
