Matthew Lee is a landscape painter who primarily enjoys working directly from life, whether it is creating a “plein air” landscape in the hills of Provence or a charcoal sketch of a friend in in Memphis where he currently lives.   He creates an immediate connection with nature by capturing the essence of light, forms and feeling of a place or subject.

Paintings are usually made in several sessions on site, with larger studio paintings sometimes developed from these.  Recently, Matthew has completed several paintings of scenes in Memphis Botanic Garden. Lee was born in Paris, France to American missionary parents from Mississippi.  He spent most of his childhood in France and Germany, the returning to Mississippi for university education.  In addition to being a painter, he is also a licensed architect.  To learn more, visit
