Dear Members and Friends -
Just as we were about to go to press with our annual Spring Appeal mailing, we, like you, were hit with the news of the COVID-19 / Coronavirus pandemic. Like so many local individuals, companies and other non-profits, your Memphis Botanic Garden is now facing a significant financial shortfall.
Revenues for the last half of March and – we project – April and May (at least) will be minimal, and while we are taking steps to reduce spending, our operating expenses continue almost unabated. 74% of the Memphis Botanic Garden’s operating budget goes toward labor costs and we are doing all we can to keep our dedicated staff employed and paid. We have classified our Horticulture, Nursery and Grounds crews to be “essential personnel” and they are charged with maintaining the grounds including our greenhouses, specimen plants as well as the inventory in our nursery.
A significant revenue source for us in the spring is our Spring Plant Sale. While we do not yet know if we can host this annual event as planned, we do know that the revenue will be far short of what we had budgeted. Similarly, we have had to cancel special events like the Cherry Blossom Picnic, Easter Egg Hunt and more. This, plus the ongoing loss of admission revenue stings.
Amongst the many appeals you are receiving for financial support, I am asking you to consider helping the Memphis Botanic Garden weather this crisis. To that end, we have created the Coronavirus Assistance Fund (CVAF), a short-term effort to help keep your garden viable and our staff fully employed and paid.
Please generously consider sending your gift by clicking here to donate.
On behalf of our staff, I thank you for your support.
