ABOUT THE SHOW AND THE ARTISTS
The Memphis 10 is a group of talented and diverse women, who, through the love of painting, meet every other month to discuss, critique, and share their artistic endeavors. Approximately twenty years ago, ten local artists started meeting routinely and eventually became The Memphis 10.
Peggy Pollard Felsenthal, Nancy Hunter, Barbara Lieberman, Marty McKee, Betty Peyton, and Virginia Schoenster were among the early members. Betsy Bird and Sharon Grinspan joined them 5 years ago.
Peggy Pollard Felsenthal paints primarily florals in oil on canvas. Nancy Hunter works in acrylic on a large scale covering a number of subjects. Barbara Lieberman’s soothing canvasses are created in oil and mixed media. Marty McKee presents a variety of cheerful subjects in acrylic and oil. Betty Peyton focuses on country scenes in oil, and Virginia Schoenster offers a touch of whimsey in acrylic. Betsy Bird provides a dramatic touch of color with her large acrylic works, and Sharon Grinspan offers work in encaustic, a technique for painting with pigmented, molten beeswax on board.
All of these artists have exhibited individually and as a group in such prestigious places as The Hunter Museum in Chattanooga, The Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Salmagundi Club in New York, The Memphis Botanic Gardens, Fountain Gallery, and the MJCC's Shainberg Art Gallery. The Memphis 10 paintings are as varied in subject and style as the ladies themselves.
