The Lausanne Sophomore Intern Project

The Memphis Botanic Garden is always looking for volunteers, and this summer we were excited to welcome four Lausanne sophomore interns. Isabella Bodini, Kaleb Cox, Koby Jeffries, and Anthony McGhee joined us from August 22nd -26th, and learned about a multitude of components essential to running the Memphis Botanic Garden. Each day this team of young people gained hands-on experience, shadowing different staff members in My Big Backyard to learn enough information to carry out their own original project. By the end of the week they literally left their mark!

During their time with David, our staff horticulturist, Isabella, Kaleb, Koby, and Anthony learned the work that goes into properly maintaining the My Big Backyard area. In addition, our student interns were exposed to the planning and preparation behind our educational programming, specifically craft workshops, while shadowing Rosemary and Gina from our Education department. By their third day here, our Lausanne sophomore interns were working on a first draft of their project proposal – a tangible addition to My Big Backyard – that they would be presenting to the education department.

Isabella, Kaleb, Koby, and Anthony proposed adding a new guest to the children’s garden: The Very Hungry Caterpillar!

The caterpillar is based on the main character from the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, written by Eric Carle. As the book suggests, our insect friend has a ravenous appetite, and is shown eating an incremental amount of fruit that increases proportionally throughout five days.

The Lausanne sophomore interns worked hard to bring this children’s book character to life, and even incorporated an educational component to their The Very Hungry Caterpillar structure.

The caterpillar not only adds color and character to our children’s garden, but also forms part of a hands-on experience that tests our visitors’ knowledge of numbers, proportions and ratios, and sequential order. Come visit My Big Backyard at the Memphis Botanic Garden to see it in person!

The Memphis Botanic Garden would like to extend a special thanks to Isabella, Kaleb, Koby, Anthony, and their instructor, Emma Perkinson, for spending the week with us and introducing The Very Hungry Caterpillar to My Big Backyard. We look forward to having you join us again!
