Summer Internship at the Garden - guest blog

My name is Jordan Podwoski, and I am a senior at Mississippi State University.  I am currently majoring in horticulture, with a concentration specializing in fruit and vegetable production. I have lived around the Memphis area for most of my life and now reside in the nearby town of Olive Branch, Mississippi. My dream is to one day work in the field of genetic modification of edible plants so they can better survive in harsher environments and be grown more efficiently and abundantly for people in underdeveloped countries.

My summer internship at the Memphis Botanic Garden has been very educational and enjoyable. Every staff member has treated me like one of the team and been more than willing to share their knowledge of gardening techniques and include me in a variety of activities. Currently, I work in The Delta Heritage Garden.

I was given free rein to choose the plant material and the overall layout of the garden. I also help water the plants in the main building and perform various duties on the grounds such as planting, weeding, and general care. I have been fortunate enough to be part of special projects, like marking tree locations with the tree team, building trellises in the children’s garden, and assisting with a food truck party, one of the many fun events offered at the Memphis Botanic Garden. My next exciting endeavor as an intern will be to attend a plant conference in Jackson, Tennessee, where I hope to learn about the new and exciting ideas in plant study and cultivation.

I have truly enjoyed my time spent at the Memphis Botanic Garden and very much appreciate the knowledge and experience I have gained from the supportive staff and through multiple opportunities that have been made available to me. I hope I am fortunate enough to find a permanent home in the Botanic Garden family in the future!
