Hello all! My name is Will Embry and I am a senior Biology major at the University of Memphis. I have been working at the Memphis Botanic Gardens now for 4 months.
I would like to take some time to tell you about our partnership with Le Bonheur in creating this year’s attraction in the Idea Garden. We took what was once a vegetable garden and a hobbit house and have transformed it into a Lost Boys Lagoon!
The project began with the planting of Chinese Windmill Palms and various other tropical plant species. We brought in white sand to give a really neat tropical island beach feel to this garden. In between the palms are misters inserted into bamboo canes, which give the effect of a pop-up tropical rain. Behind this area is the Lost Boys’ hideout, complete with a hut made of willow tree limbs and 2 swinging hammocks.
The main attraction, however, is immediately across the sidewalk from the beach area. On this piece of ground lies a wrecked pirate ship!
The front of this ship is massive and includes a helm which spins freely so that anyone can hoist the colors and set sail for adventure! Access to the ship’s helm is directly behind it with a hill leading up into the ship, giving the awesome effect that the ship has wrecked on an island and the jungle has taken over.
In front of the ship, we placed unique looking rocks that look as if the breakers of the ocean have since eroded the rocks away, and here we planted papyrus and caladiums.
Both sections of the Idea Garden present a great family photo opportunity and give a realistic feel of being on a tropical island.
