Prehistoric Plant Trail

Before there was My Big Backyard, the Prehistoric Plant Trail was a favorite among families with its dinosaur statues, fossil dig pit, cave tunnel and other special features. This garden showcases unique plantings, interpretive signage, interactive play and learning opportunities for guests of all ages. The Education Department designed special curriculum to utilize all aspects of the Prehistoric Plant Trail. Students will dig being a paleontologists for a day as they study and learn about prehistoric fossils including pieces of a petrified forest and the Tennessee state fossil, the bivalve Pterotrigonia thoracica.

Some of the featured plants in our garden were the same as the ones that could be found when dinosaurs roamed such as ferns, magnolias, horsetail and much more. Not only is the Prehistoric Plant Trail a great learning experience but it is also the spotlight of many of the Botanic Birthdays we host. During our Dino-Mite PartySaurus birthday, guests go on a dinosaur hunt in search of little dino friends. No matter what time of year it is, the Prehistoric Plant Trail is an excellent stop during your garden visit.
