Many horticultural institutions are now using Instagram as a way to reach out and share their work with the broader public because this platform makes it so easy to share fleeting garden moments and real time happenings. Memphis Botanic Garden signed on earlier this year and has been posting photos of plants, landscapes, and events of interest, daily. Since we joined, our following has grown to over 600 followers; which include gardeners, photographers, landscape designers, artists, and horticultural institutions around the world, including the world-famous Kew Gardens, who started following just last month.
Instagram allows us to share our work and love of gardens with a much broader audience than standard advertising and networking channels, putting the Memphis Botanic Garden on the world map with very little input of vital resources and a whole lot of fun!
To join, simply download the Instagram app to your mobile phone, set up an account (fast and easy), and search for memphisbotanic under the “users” section. Check out our list of Followers and who we're following to explore our network and get a feel for who is interested in what we do here at MBG. You can find others that you will want to follow and you can build a stream of visual news that is just right for your tastes. You can unfollow anyone, or any institution at any time and no one is the wiser.
In addition, Instagram offers an excellent photo-editing suite, allowing users to adjust images in a variety of ways to create stunning, artful photographs using your mobile phone. There are many other photo editing apps available, as well, that let you post straight to your Instagram feed. Even better it’s really simple to link your Instagram and Facebook account so that when you go to share a photo on Instagram you can tap the “share to Facebook” button and you’ve covered all your groups of friends, family and followers at one time. It couldn’t be easier to stay visually connected than it is these days.
Feel free to take photos here at MBG and use the hashtag #memphisbotanicgarden in the text field to share your images with us and all of our followers. We can’t wait to see what you see!
