May is a beautiful time to visit our Rose Garden, which was completely renovated thanks to a generous gift from John D. Canale, III in honor of his father, John D. Canale, Jr.
Rose Garden was renovated in the summer of 2015 with multiple design
concepts in mind. First and foremost was to make the garden more
botanically educational and inviting for our visitors. We added suitable
trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals to create a "garden with roses',
rather than a "rose garden", which serves to provide structure and
interest alongside and in between the peak bloom periods of the roses as
well as attracting pollinators and beneficial insects. To illustrate
the great diversity of roses, the garden now features twenty-seven
classes, ranging from ancient Damasks to modern Hybrid Teas, simulating a
timeline of rose cultivation from its inception to the present. We
also wanted to make the garden more event-friendly. This was
accomplished by widening the entry path and removing former rose beds to
create what is now informally known as the bridal court, an all-weather
space suitable for both large and small gatherings. In addition, we
corrected long-standing drainage challenges by incorporating pervious
concrete walks and a subsurface drain system to capture excess rainfall
and facilitate evaporative cooling, which is beneficial for roses and
guests alike. Finally, numerous benches were installed to offer visitors
places to pause and enjoy the lavish colors and scents of the roses and

project over the past year, significance behind the hardscape and
plantings, and what we can expect as the roses grow into maturity.
Members of the Memphis Rose Society will be on hand to share information
and discuss rose cultivation and care.
