Greenhouse Plant Collection

The Memphis Botanic Garden's Greenhouse houses many wonderful tropical plants that the horticulture staff tends to throughout the year for use in the building with events and for summer display containers. Part of the Garden's mission is to establish and maintain groups of like plants. We have many excellent collections such as our Ilex (hollies), Magnolias and conifers. We also have a number of plants not currently on display. The Sansevierias, collectively called "mother in law's tongue," were donated by the family of the late Memphis floral designer and plant collector Kirk Pamper. The Garden has a huge selection and it is believed to be the second largest number of specie in the country. The Orchid collection came from several Memphis collectors along with occasional confiscated items we receive from US government. We have hundreds of orchids in our collection that have been either donated or they were seized plants given to us by the Department of Agriculture. The Memphis Orchid Society volunteers help to maintain these plants throughout the year.
