Over the years, our family, like countless other families in Memphis and the Mid-South, have come out to enjoy the beauty of the Memphis Botanic Garden and fun of My Big Backyard. There is nothing quite like spending the day watching our kids climbing into the big tree house, enjoying digging in the sand, playing in the creek, as well as learning how we can better protect our environment and preserve our natural resources. Spending time walking through the gardens is also always on the top of our to do list and no walk is complete without stopping by to feed the fish in the Japanese Garden. Unfortunately, for many families of chronically ill children here in Memphis and the Mid-South an idyllic visit to the Botanic Garden is just not possible because of the financial hardships often associated with caring for a very sick child. The Forrest Spence Fund was founded by Memphians David and Brittany Spence to honor the memory of their son Forrest. The Forrest Spence Fund exists to provide support to families of chronically ill children here in Memphis and the Mid-South.
One of the Fund’s largest fundraisers is the Forrest Spence 5K race which will, for the first time, be held at the Memphis Botanic Garden. The race takes place on Saturday, August 27th at 8:00 a.m. and will also include a one mile family fun run, 100 yard dash for younger children, as well as a host of other fun, family friendly activities. So, mark your calendars for August 27th and plan to make it a day at the Botanic Garden where you can spend an enjoyable day with your family AND support families of chronically ill children all across our region.
