Carrying on the Herb Fest tradition

For 25 years, on Memorial Day weekend, visitors flocked to Anthony’s Herb Farm in Brighton, TN, for their annual Herb Festival. Anchored under the giant oak tree in the front yard of their country home, the festival featured talks, demos, vendors, and herbs...lots of herbs! If you've ever attended, you'll likely remember sampling herbal teas, lemonade, cookies, cakes, dips, and other treats in lawn chairs around the old oak. Whether it was your first time or you were a seasoned veteran, everyone gathered to visit and taste. Kids loved petting the goat and trying their first sip of fresh goat's milk. It was a unique experience, like visiting your country cousins, shopping the farmers' market and plant sale, all rolled into one.

Last year, Mr. & Mrs. Anthony retired their festival, leaving the Mid-South herb community feeling a little empty. Then an idea was formulated...the Memphis Herb Society would partner with Memphis Botanic Garden to pick up the legacy, and a new celebration was born! This year's Herbal Celebration will take place on Friday, May 22, from 10 am-5 pm at the Garden. Many of the vendors from Anthony's Herb Fest will be on hand, along with some new faces and fresh creations for the Herbal Marketplace. The Garden will offer herbs and plants for sale, and horticulture staff and volunteers will lead tours of the extensive Herb Garden. In keeping with the Anthonys' tradition, expert speakers will present talks and demos on everything from growing to cooking to crafting with herbs.

Talks and activities will be free with Garden admission, and no reservations are needed. Just come on out and help us grow this new event into a tradition that Mr. and Mrs. Anthony would be proud for us to continue!
