As the seasons change and we long for cooler weather and colorful leaves, our horticultural staff is preparing to make new changes to the Hydrangea Garden. Our Hydrangea Garden was installed in the spring of 2007 and now surrounds the Blecken Pavilion. The Mid-South Hydrangea Society was instrumental in helping us create this collection and is working with the MBG horticulture staff this fall to update some of the original plantings.
Hydrangea macrophylla, commonly called the mophead hydrangea, is the star of this garden. The Endless Summer collection consists of new hybrids that are remonant (reblooming!), so not only will we have blooms in the late spring, but they will continue blooming through fall. We are adding four new Endless Summer hydrangeas. The original type, with large, round, blue or pink blooms. Blushing Bride, with pure white blooms that mature to a pink blush. Twist-n-Shout, the first reblooming lace cap hydrangea, with amazing pink or periwinkle blue flowers. And, lastly, Bloomstruck, with sturdy, red stems and vivid purple or rose-pink flower heads.
We cannot thank the Mid-South Hydrangea Society enough for their expert help with plant selection and commitment to assisting our staff with care and maintenance of our Hydrangea Garden. We are truly grateful for all of the plant societies that partner with us to provide a place of horticulture excellence and education. You can support these groups by joining them or attending their meetings, many of which take place right here at the Garden. Click here for plant societies and their contact information.
