My name is Khadejah and I am completing an internship at the MBG in the Sensory Garden, sponsored by The Little Garden Club of Memphis. The Little Garden Club Sensory Garden, established in 1987, was designed by Tom Pellet to enable individuals with special needs to enjoy and engage in the gardening experience. The garden is handicap accessible, with majority of it [garden] elevated for an easy view from a wheelchair. The Little Garden Club Sensory Garden maintains a formalized look and ambiance, which offers a sensory experience for adults. This summer, the MBG is striving to encourage children to appreciate and explore the sensory garden.
As a component of my internship, I created the “Scratch N’ Sniff” exhibit in The Little Garden Club Sensory Garden. Children love to touch everything! So, why not let them? The “Scratch N’ Sniff” exhibit is a series of potted plants designed to stimulate the senses and engage sight, smell, touch, taste, and sound. The “Scratch N’ Sniff” exhibit is filled with an assortment of smells and fascinating plants that are furry, silky, and bumpy. It incorporates bright colors and wonderful smells to inspire kids to use their great senses and learn about different plants. Some of these plants include: citronella, Florida anise, lamb’s ear, lavender, purple velvet, silver mound, sweet basil, and much more! All plants are easily accessible, so every kid gets to connect with nature and experience the sensory garden!
