July 2-July 30. ‘Wallflower Meditations’ by Kimberly Mathews.
On display in the Visitors Center.
Wallflower Meditations is a series of botanical watercolor paintings that began as a love of flowers with a simple wish to capture and preserve their grandeur before the inevitable moment in which they fade and wither. The works in this series capture intricate details that go undetected unless carefully studied. They also highlight the vast array of colors hidden in plain sight when the eye chooses to characterize an object with only one hue.
Painting in this style requires focused observation before applying numerous brush strokes to realistically render depth and textural components that create a desire to reach out and touch the fuzzy surface of a succulent petal or the sharp prick from the needle of a cactus. Over the years, what began solely as a love of flowers has developed into a meditative practice which has drawn me deeper and deeper into nature, the complexities of color, the revelations of light, and the building blocks of beauty. This series invites the viewer to spend time with the wallflowers and meditate on what lies within.
Living specimens and my own photography are used to study individual blooms from every perspective until I isolate that which I wish to commemorate. A limited watercolor palette is used to achieve vibrancy. Many layers of transparent colors create depth, complexity, and texture. All of my paintings are created using archival materials and are framed under museum glass with the intended purpose that their beauty may outlive the viewer.
