June 10 – July 31. "Folk Art" from the collection of Judy Peiser. On display in the Grand Hallway

“Few people are able to combine their passions with their life’s work.  Judy Peiser did.  She grew up regularly going to the Brooks Museum, falling in love with art.  She also grew up listening to her father’s stories of his days as a lawyer when he regaled her mother and her at the end of each day with what he did to get his clients out of the trouble they were in.  Combining storytelling and art, she co-founded the Center for Southern Folklore and dedicated her life to preserving art of all kinds and the stories behind the art.  She learned from her father that you had to be nice to people to get them to tell you their stories, so she bought their art, recognizing the high quality and the role these artists play in perpetuating “Folk Art,” work that is often done by self-taught artists who aim to reflect the cultural life of a community.  This show is the result of lots of “Folk Art” purchases in exchange for stories preserved through the Center for Southern Folklore!”
