Ikebana Classes

Ikebana is a continuous and life-long practice of the fine art of Japanese flower arranging.  This year we are using 4 members of Ikebana International, Memphis Bamboo Chapter #44 to teach the classes. Instructors represent 4 different schools, have taken lessons for more than 25 years, and continue to study the art themselves. Interested people should feel free to take any lesson, at any time, and begin this rewarding practice. No experience necessary. Advanced classes also available (by invitation only). Students need to provide a container and kenzan, flowers are provided. 9:30 & 10:30 classes are the same, please choose one. Fee is $15 per class. Pre-registration required by Tuesday prior; contact

Japanese Calligraphy
7:00-8:30 p.m.
Shodo means “the way of writing” in Japanese. The class does not aim at acquisition of characters, so you need not worry about having learned the Japanese language. You can enjoy the art of writing Japanese calligraphy and experiencing Japanese culture with certified instructor Chikako Kamimura. All supplies provided. Beginners welcome. $36 for series, due on first night of class/individual sessions available as space allows. To register, contact Akemi Sommer, asommer@memphis.edu.

Ikebana Floral Demo
10:30 a.m.
Naohiro Kasuya, Iemoto Designate of the Ichiyo School of Ikebana in Tokoyo, Japan will demonstrate contemporary Japanese flower arrangements that are known for graceful lines and imaginative use of natural materials. Ichiyo School of Ikebana seeks to create original ikebana suitable for modern life and make contemporary forms that focus on the personal expression of the arranger. He will lead a flower design workshop at 1 pm (space is limited.)
