Celebrate the history, culture and people of Japan at the Memphis Botanic Garden Japanese Festival on September 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring demonstrations on tea ceremony, origami, chopsticks, kimono dressing, Bon odori, koi ponds, and more. Be amazed by the Candyman from Epcot as he creates works of art from spun sugar!  Enjoy the energizing sounds of Kaminari Taiko drummers. Kids can try their hands at traditional Japanese games while parents shop at our Japanese marketplace. Enjoy a taste of Japan with concessions by Sekisui as well as guided tours of our Japanese Garden throughout the day. This year's festival will take place on the TruGreen Lawn, with performances on our new Jim Duncan Stage! Special thanks to Japanese Traders and Manufacturers Association of Memphis, First Tennessee Foundation, Sekisui, Ikebana International, The University of Memphis and Japan America Society of TN. ADULT PROGRAMS:

September 3, 10, 17, 24, October 1 - Urban Forestry Advisor’s Class - Join the West Tennessee Chapter of the Urban Forestry Council and Memphis Botanic Garden for this opportunity to learn about trees and issues facing the urban tree canopy. This course is designed for the general public, municipal employees, members of neighborhood associations, and garden clubs. 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. There is an $85 class fee. September 4 - Bringing Nature Home: Sustaining Wildlife with Native Plants - Dr. Douglas Tallamy, Professor and Chair of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, is the author of the widely acclaimed book, Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants. 6:30 - 8 p.m. Free to WRC & MBG members/non-members $4. September 5 -  Project Learning Tree Educator Workshop - Become a PLT certified educator through this award-winning environmental education program. For formal and informal educators working with grades K-12. Free. Lunch provided by Einsten Bros Bagels. 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Call 636-4110.  

SEPTEMBER VINE TO WINE:

September 30 - Vine to Wine at the Garden: My Big Backyard BBQ - Presented by IBERIABANK. Join us for a down-home (but grown up) party in My Big Backyard, with live music by Minor Street Strings and eats by Central BBQ. Must be 21 to attend. 6 -8 p.m. Members $25/non-members $35. ART IN THE GARDEN:  

September 3-28 - Cloth/Paper ~ Cutting Edge by  Phyllis Boger and Antzee Magruder - On display and available for purchase in the Visitors Center Gallery. Opening reception September 10,  5:30-7:30 p.m., with a free “pop-up” performance from Opera Memphis, part of their 30 Days of Opera. A portion of proceeds benefits Memphis Botanic Garden’s art, education, and horticulture programs. Call 636-4100.


September 5-October 2 - Tree Show No. 1 by Students of The Fred Rawlinson Atelier -  Work on display and available for purchase in Fratelli's Cafe Gallery. A portion of proceeds benefits Memphis Botanic Garden’s art, education, and horticulture programs. Call 636-4100 for information.


September 20 - Introductory Encaustic 101 - This class is designed to teach the basics of using encaustic medium and paint, and is a prerequisite for the 201 level classes. 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Additional dates: October 11, November 15. MBG members $115/non-members $125. Call 636-4128  to register.

September 21 - Extended Encaustic Techniques 201 -  Preparation of rigid substrate will be demonstrated by the instructors and executed by the students. The class will cover more layering and various types of pouring techniques that will allow the student to make the perfect pour. 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. MBG members $115/non-members $125. FAMILY EVENTS:

September 3 - Home School Days: Jungle Carnival - Ages 5 and up. Join us at the Garden the first Wednesday of each month for an exciting, hands-on learning experience! This month, travel to different carnival style booths, participating in fun games and activities to learn about the rainforests of the world. 2 - 3:30 p.m. MBG members $4/non-members $5, does not include Garden admission after class. September 9 or 10 - Caterpillar Club: Micro-Metereology AND September 23 or 24 - Caterpillar Club: Sowing Seeds in the Sun Toddlers to five years.  Join us for fun-filled stories, music & movement, nature-inspired art, and adventure hikes in My Big Backyard. Additional dates: October 7 or 8; October 21 or 22; November 11 or 12; December 9 or 10. 10 - 11 a.m. 6-class semester price: MBG members $40/non-members $70. September 9 - Food Truck Garden Party - Presented by Oak Hall and Vineyard Vines. Come join us for dinner al fresco, featuring live music, cash bar, and local food trucks. 5 -8 p.m. MBG members $5/non-members $10, includes one drink. The Roots members admission is FREE! Tickets available online or at the gate.

September 8, 15, 22, 29 - Citizen Science September - Drop in to a special area of the Garden each Monday to learn from local experts how kids and adults alike can help collect data about a species that will be submitted to real-world scientists. 3:30 - 5 p.m. Free with Garden admission.

September 14 - Family Painting En Plein Air- Monet’s Japanese Bridge and September 21 - Family Painting En Plein Air-The Sunflowers and Landscapes of the Idea Garden and September 28 - Family Painting En Plein Air-The Butterfly - Come out and paint in the Artist’s Garden!  2 - 4  p.m. MBG members $5 per canvas/non-members Garden admission plus $5 per canvas. September 28 - Dog Day at the Garden - Sponsored by Hollywood Feed. Join us for a four-legged-friendly event for dogs and their faithful owners! Enter to win prizes for best trick, most fitting name, and best costume. Keep cool all afternoon in the McGehee Clinic Hot Diggity Dog Kiddie Pool Area. Farmers’ Market at the Garden - Wednesdays through October 30 - Presented by Stellar. Shop from a variety of goods that are locally grown and produced, including fresh produce, home-baked breads and sweets, honey, artisan items, and more! 2 -6 p.m. Open to the public.

MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM: 

 

September 6 - Ballet Memphis presents Midsummer Night’s Dream - A magical outdoor evening of fireflies and fairies, mischief and magic. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. with activities throughout the garden for the family. Performance begins at dark and runs one hour.  Three ticket options offer something for everyone: · Lawn Seating - $10 per person. Stage Seating - $25 per person.
